Autonomous vehicles (also known as driverless cars) are sharing the roads with human-driven cars as well as pedestrians and many other vehicles. It is foreseeable that when millions of these vehicles navigate roads, they may be in situations where they would not be able to avoid harming humans. The criteria by which these machines decide how to cause the least harm are being studied. We plan to have an exploratory session on criteria by which decisions are made in ethical dilemma leading to participants gaining an understanding of the notion of Nash equilibria with mixed strategies. At the minimum, participants will be introduced to the notions from game theory. This activity is aimed for 11 to 12 year-olds who would gain an appreciation for decision-making in mathematical models of conflict and cooperation between intelligent rational agents.
